Introduction

Glu Mobile (formerly Cie Games) is a mobile game developer based in Long Beach, California. Car Town was a social / mobile games that focused on social aspect of community, collecting loot, customizing your cars, home and garage, and the competitiveness of gamers in their teens.

My Role

My role in Car Town was a Visual Designer, who worked on UI design, post-production, and concept sketching. The team I was part of was myself, UX Designer (Yuri S), Senior Graphic Designer (Amy D), Senior Illustrator ( Crystal T), 3D Artist (Nathan Y), and our Art Director (Teresa Y).

Visual UI Design

I primarily worked on the web and mobile game called Car Town. I worked on the UI elements that created the HUD of the game, for both the “overworld” view as well as during the “racing duels”. Below is a short video clip for the game's Halloween Adventure where you can see the layers UI elements in action.

Post-Production Work

For Car Town, I worked on assets that ranged from cars, objects, and buildings. The 3D objects would be shared with the visual and graphic designers, as unfinished low resolution polygons. We’d use real world photography of the cars as both a visual reference when adding reflections, highlights, and shadows, as well as a resource for pulling wheel rims for our game. For buildings and other objects that were not cars, we’d also add textures, shadowing and lighting those.I would also be responsible to creating micro-animations with our assets, such as spoilers/wings opening and closing, rims spinning when cars are in motion, and other things like bats flying around a spooky castle during our Halloween events.

Animating Cars, UI, Characters

Certain UI elements had micro animations, whether on click, on hover, or on loop. Other screens and scenarios called for micro animations to add liveliness and fun to the light-hearted game.

I also animated parts of the cars like the wheels spinning, as well as other additions elements during our "adventure" themed events.
